When inspecting our homes for any outdoor maintenance, people tend to focus on large surfaces such as the walls or roof paying little to no attention to small ones, especially if they are difficult to reach. Obviously, this is a big mistake as things like windows, soffits, and fascia could (quite literally) make or break our home if they’re not taken care of properly.

If any (or all of these) have deteriorated, it is important to react in a timely manner. Here are the two basic things you can to do make them look brand new. Following these steps can improve the condition of our home’s fascia, soffits, and windows without replacing them:

1. Inspect & Clean

Many homeowners forget this, but fascia boards are incredibly susceptible to rot, especially if they’re right under the gutters. Therefore, the first thing to do is clean them. A pressure washer can be used but be careful not to use too high a pressure or get too close, as you may peel the paint off.  Otherwise a water hose and some soap or simple green will do.

If there are any traces of water-induced deterioration, such as wood rot, it is important to call a professional to remove and replace the affected areas.

If there are no signs of wood rot, and after all the parts have been cleaned, let it dry completely.

Once finished, there should be no paint blisters or watermarks anywhere in sight. That’s when to proceed to the next step.

2. Time To Paint

As already mentioned, the cleaning process doesn’t end with a perfect-looking result. To fix that, pick a high-quality exterior paint that can stand constant exposure to the elements. Such paint will help the woodwork to last longer and do a better job at protecting your home.

Before painting the woodwork, a quality undercoat should be applied. As paint is applied, make sure to do so from one side of the house to the other. Keeping a steady direction will help minimize the chances of lap marks.
